A MIRACLE OF BLESSED JOHN PAUL II
After twelve years (1998-2010) of almost 24/7 Catholic programming in Metro Detroit, the only Catholic program left on WCAR 1090 AM is the Sunday 10:00am Holy Mass (in Spanish) from Historic Ste. Anne de Detroit.
Losing full-time Catholic radio on WCAR in August 2010 was very difficult for many listeners ... but God has heard and answered those who continue praying for its return! What happened next is a miracle!
On May 2, 2011, the day after the Mercy Sunday Beatification of Pope John Paul II, the station owner suddenly called me with an opportunity to bring Catholic Radio back to 1090!
We are convincedthis is a miracle of Divine Mercy now happening through the intercession of Blessed Pope John Paul II, St. Faustina and the mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Anne who was just named Patron Saint of Detroit by Archbishop Allen Vigneron on May 5th.

PROGRAMMING TO WCAR 1090 AM
Members and friends of Divine Mercy Network know a little of the story from our very first Heart of the Matter Newsletter (October, 30, 2010) just over two months after Divine Mercy Network was forced to stop our 24/7 broadcast of Catholic radio on WCAR 1090 AM in Detroit because of financial problems.
Now is not the time or place to go into the details of how and why we had to stop ... and to be quite honest, I hope I will never be compelled to reveal those details. A little of the past is actually necessary however to lay the backdrop on this truly amazing story. I hope it will set you on fire to help in every way possible ... God is watching closely!
Perhaps most of you know that it was my father, John A. Kruse, who was credited by Mother Angelica (LISTEN) for starting full-time Catholic radio in Detroit with WCAR 1090 AM, Michigan's first independently owned and operated Catholic radio station ... the third full time Catholic station EVER in the United States!
That was in 1998. At that time I was Providentially blessed to be close to the day to day developments as my dad scrambled to raise the millions of dollars necessary to make it all happen. The Lord put me in the right place at the right time to suggest that the entire Catholic radio effort be specially dedicated to the Divine Mercy message and devotion, as revealed by Christ to St. Faustina.
Dad liked the idea and he and my late mother, Mary Kruse (God rest her soul) and my sister Mary Dudley, presented the idea. The board agreed and the next thing my dad said to me was "Now what do we do?" Good question. How should I know?:)
I excitedly called Fr. Seraphim Michalenko at the National Shrine of Divine Mercy, where I used to work, to tell him the great news that Michigan's very first full time independent Catholic radio station was going to be "Proclaiming Divine Mercy." He was quite happy to hear this news of course and during our conversation I said something along the lines of, "Hey Father Seraphim, what are the chances we could get the Pope to give us some kind of special blessing, now that it's going to be about Divine Mercy?"
To my amazement Fr. Seraphim's reply was "What do you want it to say? I'm going to Rome next week and I'll be
seeing His Holiness privately."
"You've got to be kidding me!" I replied. And of course, he wasn't kidding. Fr. Seraphim and I stayed on the phone for about twenty or thirty more minutes to brainstorm the text of the famous and very unique blessing that was given by now Blessed Pope John Paul II.
During our discussion, I selected the three pictures and their locations that appear on the blessing. They are the Pope, Jesus The Divine Mercy and Our Lady of Guadalupe. Then Fr. Seraphim, at his expense, had our words (together with beautiful flowering) hand painted onto a three foot high parchment like material.
About a month later a long tube showed up at my dad's house from Rome! Fr. Seraphim came through for all of us as we now had an extremely unique Apostolic Blessing from the Holy Father. He signed the blessing on October 15, 1998, just one day before celebrating his 20th year in the St. Peter's Chair! (Roll your mouse over the blessing below for a close-up on the text)
My father and mother were kind enough to pay a local company to secure this unique blessing in a beautiful first class frame, which we displayed at various Catholic radio events from 1998 - 2006.
The text of the blessing above begins with "On the occasion of the dedication ..." The dedication referred to is the actual physical blessing of 1090 AM on Divine Mercy Sunday of 1999 by His Eminence Adam Cardinal Maida, then Archbishop of Detroit. The now deceased Bishop Kevin Britt (God rest his soul) seen below was the Episcopal Advisor to WCVA, Inc., the non-profit ministry founded by John A. Kruse to program 1090 AM Catholic.
The actual physical station in Garden City received and still has an Apostolic Blessing and, as you can read from the text in the Papal blessing above, YOU and every other person who supports the "endeavor" of making and keeping "WCAR AM 1090 ... in the Archdiocese of Detroit" Catholic, is the recipient of Blessed Pope John Paul II's "...Special Apostolic Blessing."
I wanted to give you this brief history to highlight one of the major reasons why a quickly growing number of people believe that the new Blessed Pope John Paul II has obtained a Catholic radio miracle on WCAR 1090 AM. Why do we see this a miracle? I'm glad you asked!
Divine Mercy Network incurred a tremendous amount of debt to the new owner during the year we saved Catholic radio on 1090 (August 2009 - August 2010) which is why we had to call it quits over nine months ago. No other Catholic radio took its placeduring those nine months. And during this darkness, marked by the long cold winter nights, 1090 AM was not only NOT Catholic, the programming on this Apostolically Blessed Station was not even Christian! In fact Islamic programming has been heard on Detroit's formerly Catholic radio for nine months!
I'll be very honest my friends ... it was one thing to lose my job and ministry in Catholic radio in 2006 ... it was one thing to have the Catholic radio ministry suddenly come back to me three years later in 2009 - only to have it slip away again after a year. It was quite another thing to realize that after all those years of prayer and work from so many people that somehow God would allow the station to not only not be Catholic ... but to broadcast Islamic radio programs instead! This was a difficult pill to swallow and I was tempted to doubt my faith.
Over the last half year I resolved to do my best to simply accept God's will and move on. And I promised myself that no matter what, I would not try to get back onto WCAR or any other station. I was finished with Catholic radio. But I had one prayer left concerning the whole matter, which I even shared with my wife Marie.
After working through some serious issues of trust and faith, I made one final prayer during the last few months. I said, "Lord, You know everything and everything You do is good. You know my ideas about what should have - and could have happened with Catholic radio on 1090. My last prayer to You about it is this: Lord, if You want 1090 to be Catholic again ... and if I am to have anything to do with it ... then it will have to come from the owner himself. I cannot and will not write to him or call him with any ideas or plans. If it is Your will for 1090 to be Catholic You must have the owner call me."
I then apologized to the Lord for being so bold. But you must understand, I was finished with Catholic radio and 1090 for good! And since my small, poor company -Divine Mercy Network - went into such debt during the year we kept 1090 Catholic, and since the owner is not Catholic (he is Orthodox), I figured that was the end of it.
So now you should understand why we believe the very unexpected call I received from the new owner of 1090 is a miracle! This call came one day after Pope John Paul II's Beatification on Divine Mercy Sunday and it resulted in a miraculous new opportunity for Divine Mercy Network to bring Catholic programming back to WCAR ... back to Detroit! YES, this is a miracle due to his intercession. The Great Mercy Pope and Saint Faustina have heard your prayers from Heaven and we have been given yet another opportunity to keep 1090 Catholic!
Perhaps some may say this is all just coincidence. Well, as our close friend, now Servant of God, Fr. John Hardon would say ... "The word 'chance' is not in God's vocabulary." It's called Divine Providence and Divine Mercy!!!
